DEBUSSY (Claude).
La Damoiselle élue. Lyrical poem, after D.-G. Rossetti. French translation by Gabriel Sarrazin.
Paris : Librairie de l'art indépendant, 1893. - In-folio, paperback, filled cover.
Cailler, " Catalogue raisonné de l'Œuvre gravé de M. Denis ", n° 30.

First edition, dedicated to Paul Duka, of the score for voice and piano of this famous cantata composed by Claude Debussy on a libretto by Dante Gabriel Rossetti

.

This work is one of the most emblematic of Art Nouveau. The cover is illustrated with a superb lithograph by Maurice Denis, which Debussy did not hesitate to describe as "rare and precious", depicting the chosen Damoiselle, standing before a balustrade, surrounded by a starry night where happy souls and angels flutter. This was one of the first compositions that the painter produced for a book; he was only 23 years old at the time and had just left traditional iconography to turn to symbolism. This illustration, together with the score, attracted music lovers, painters, poets and, of course, bibliophiles.

Only 160 copies of the edition were printed; this one is one of 125 on white vellum (n° 116).

Cover soiled, restoration to a corner of the first cover, tears and missing parts to the spine. The first and last leaves have been glued to the endpapers, leaving some light traces of glue in the inner margins. Light russeting in the margins of pages 11 to 21.
