Philippe BOESMANS (born 1936). Autograph musical manuscript, Concerto for violin and orchestra, 1979; 70 leaves (the first one a little frayed at the top) 43 x 32,5 cm. Orchestral score of this Concerto for violin, premiered on February 22, 1980 in Liège during the Liège Festival for the Millennium of the Principality of Liège, by Richard Pieta and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Liège, conducted by Pierre Bartholomée, who recorded it (Ricercar, 1982). Published in 1980 by Jobert, it is dedicated to the memory of Marcel Florkin and Jean-Louis Robert. [WD11]. With a duration of 24 minutes, it has 531 measures. The orchestra includes 3 flutes, 2 oboes, 4 clarinets, bassoon, 4 horns, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones, tuba, 4 percussionists, piano, harp, and strings. "The Violin Concerto is a tribute to the Liège and Verviers school of violin playing, represented notably by Vieuxtemps and Ysaÿe. [...] The grand form is based on transitions from chromaticism to diatonism, or vice versa, transitions dear to Philippe Boesmans, and the echo participates in the structural game. [The orchestra supports the soloist, precedes him, plays on the paraphrase, the development until the deployment melts them into each other (central cadenza). The performer constantly dominates the game, thus distributing the material that the orchestra takes hold of and feeds on. The diabolical violin leaves room in turn for humour, tenderness or nostalgia" (Valérie Dufour). The manuscript is carefully written in Indian ink on 36-line tracing paper. It is dated at the end "28/11/1979". There are some corrections by scratching.
