Franz LISZT. L.A. (end missing), Lille 16 January 1846, [to Count Gustave de Neipperg]; 4 pages in-8. Curious letter about his interest in phrenology. [It mentions Dr. Michel Arthur Castle, who lived in Milan, author of some 2000 phrenological studies of living persons, including Liszt, and who counted Count Gustave de Neipperg among his disciples and admirers. Chapter XVI of the Voyage pittoresque en Italie. Partie septentrionale (1855) by Paul de Musset mentions, among the memories of Milan before 1848, Count de Neipperg, a follower of phrenology, and the visit they made to Dr. Castle, quoting at length the phrenological study Castle had devoted to Liszt. Castel published a Spiritualist Phrenology in 1862] He kept a "deep and cordial memory [...] of our days in Milan; [...] I am pleased to hope that we shall begin again and as well as we can our artistic and philosophical tabagies; seasoned with gunpowder tea," for he intends to make the account "a visit of eight days between my stay in Vienna and my journey to Hungary."... But he wants to talk to him about the affair of the Castle Manuscript, received through Count Alfred Neipperg. "I do not apologize to you for having abused your patience so much by dealing so long with my sores and bumps [...] The publication in Paris of this manuscript absolutely requires some grammatical and literary reworking. The person I have entrusted with this task will carry it out with all the talent and tact that are desirable. You will be able to judge for yourself, for as soon as the work is finished I will hasten to send you the manuscript and let you know the name of our proofreader. [...] Jules Janin will be kind enough to take care of the question of the publisher and the printing. For my part I maintain my subscription of 100 copies and will gladly double it if necessary; but I could not commit myself beyond that. It will therefore be necessary for Castle to take care of the rest of the expenses, which will not be excessive. As for finding a publisher who will agree to pay 2,000 francs out of his own pocket as an author's fee [....] "
