Vincent d'INDY (1851-1931). Autograph manuscript signed, Fervaal, 1894; infol. booklet of 80 pages, marbled paper cover. Libretto for his opera Fervaal. Fervaal was first performed on March 12, 1897 at La Monnaie in Brussels. As d'Indy mentions at the beginning, this is the "last sketch of the Fervaal poem begun in 1887, finished in 1893. This sketch, dated 1894, was used for the musical composition of the last act (1895). The manuscript was given by d'Indy in 1902 (the name of the dedicatee has been erased). The words of this "dramatic work in a prologue and three acts" in verse are carefully written on the right-hand pages, numbered from 1 to 40; opposite, on the left-hand pages, d'Indy has written the didascalies and stage directions. The title page lists the characters, with their tessitura written in pencil. Two L.A.S. from V. d'Indy to his "dear Juju", July 29, 1925 and Agay March 31, 1929, are bound at the head of the manuscript. A brochure printed on Fervaal, an offprint from the Revue Internationale de Musique for the Parisian premiere at the Opéra-Comique (May 10, 1898), is attached.
