VAN DONGEN (Kees) - MARGUERITE (Victor). La Garçonne. Paris : Ernest Flammarion, [1925]. - In-4, 247 x 190 : (6 ff. 2 first blanks), 386 pp, (3 ff. 2 last blanks), 28 plates, illustrated cover. Half lemon morocco with corners, gilt fillets, spine ribbed and decorated with fruits and a woman in bust holding a rose, mosaic of different morocco, gilt head, untrimmed, cover and spine preserved (Vermorel). Edition printed at 778 copies, illustrated with 28 out-of-text colour compositions by Kees VAN DONGEN (1877-1968). This novel, a true feminist pamphlet, was first published in 1922. It is the story of a free young girl who, a few years after the war, multiplies her male and female conquests. The book was considered offensive, so much so that the author was stripped of the Legion of Honour. However, this did not prevent the novel from being a huge success. It was also adapted for the theatre and the cinema. One of 636 copies on Arches paper (n° 494), very well bound by Vermorel. It has been enriched with the program of the play based on the novel, performed at the Théâtre du Nouvel-Ambigu during the 1926-1927 season.
