JANIN (Jules). A winter in Paris. Second edition. - The Summer in Paris. Paris: L. Curmer, 1844-[1843]. - 2 volumes in-8, 268 x 183: (2 ff.), 283 pp. 18 plates; VIII, 279 pp. 18 plates. Publisher's illustrated white boards, untrimmed. Third edition, or second printing of the second edition, of Un hiver à Paris, and first edition of L'Été à Paris. In these two works, Janin, through an American traveller, analyses and comments on the manners, habits and history of famous or unknown Parisians; he describes the capital and its surroundings such as Chantilly, Versailles, Montmorency, etc., taking us through characteristic places or events such as the galleries of the Louvre, the peasants' ball, the Chantilly races, etc. Each work is illustrated with several woodcut vignettes in the text, by various artists, and 18 steel engraved plates after Eugène Lami. The second edition of Un hiver à Paris was published the same year as the original, without any mention of edition, with the same pagination but with less woodcuts, about thirty against more than 50 in the original. This one, bearing the mention of "second edition" and the date of 1844 in Roman numerals, is similar to the second one; there is only one vignette less, and Aubert's name is no longer on the title. Copies in the publisher's white boards printed in gold and illustrated with a woodcut on each board, a very rare condition. The binding of Un hiver à Paris is dated 1843 while the other one is dated 1844. The boards are very well preserved but soiled. The spines and the second plate of Un Été à Paris are browned. Some scattered foxing.
