BÉRANGER (Pierre-Jean de). Songs by P. J. de Béranger, Old, New and Unpublished, with vignettes by Devéria and coloured drawings by Henri Monnier. Followed by the trials of the author. Paris : Baudoin frères, 1828. - 2 volumes in-8, 219 x 133 : (2 ff.), 12, 439 pp. ; (2 ff.), 438 pp., (1 blank f.). Half dark blue basane, smooth spine decorated (contemporary binding). Partly original edition, containing at the end the important account of the censorship proceedings brought against the author for his songs. Copy without the figures by Monnier, which have been replaced by 83 of the 87 engravings of the Johannot suite of 1829, including the portrait of the author engraved by Cousin after Scheffer and 82 very beautiful vignettes out of text engraved with burin on the drawings of the best artists of the time: Tony and Alfred Johannot, Eugène and Achille Devéria, Charlet, Théophile Fragonard, Isabey, Grandville, Henri Monnier, Eugène Lami, Delacroix, Vernet, Bellangé, Adam, Grenier, Boulanger, etc. According to the list given by Brivois (Bibliographie de l'œuvre de P.-J. de Béranger, 1876, page 29 and following), the figures respectively captioned: Les Gaulois et les francs, Le Troisième mari, Le Marquis de Carabas and Psara are missing. THESE 82 VIGNETTES ARE HERE PART OF THE VERY RARE COLORED SUITE. Carteret describes it as "extremely rare" and Brivois affirms that it is "of an insignificant rarity" specifying that he has seen only one copy. The copy is also enriched with the following pieces : - 6 of the 8 anonymous erotic engravings, unbound and placed flying opposite the songs they illustrate . The one placed on page 195 of the first volume has been cut at the corners and shows traces of glue on the back. - 2 anonymous erotic engravings of the period, loose, opposite pages 69 and 417 of the first volume, relating to the songs Le Vieux célibataire and Le Philosophe. - L.A.S. from Béranger to M. Bizet, Passy 26 October 1831, 1 1/2 page in-12, address. He thanks him for the songs he sent him. "Your two Polonaises attest to noble sentiments and you have been able to find a suitable expression for them... As for the song in which you are willing to praise me, it is too kind and too witty for me not to be particularly grateful to you, Monsieur. It gives me a double pleasure, that of singing it and of sending you my very sincere thanks." - L.A.S. from Béranger to the poet Hippolyte Tampucci (1802-1880), Passy 16 January 1847, 2 pages in-12, address . Béranger learns of his correspondent's entry into the literary career: "I hope that the return to the muses will be an encouragement to you for other attempts... You have no doubt of the pleasure I will have in reading your new works and if I have any serious observation to make to you believe that I will not hesitate to submit it to you." Some rubbing from use to the binding, corners slightly dulled. Scattered foxing. Light staining in the margin of the first leaves of the second volume.
