Odilon Redon (1840-1916 )Captive Pegasus. 1889. Lithograph. 295 x 338. Mellerio 102. A fine proof on chine appliqué, of the 1st state (of 2), before the new work in the wing, with the lithographed mention above the subject on the right "Captive Pegasus 100 exemp. ", signed in pencil below the subject at lower right, washed (a little gray, the chine pulled up). Old traces of creases perceptible at the edges of the sheet and light persistent foxing. Thread-like traces of surface rubbing in the blacks. Reduced margins [380 x 433]. Rare. Edition announced at 100 proofs (but not realized - in fact only 25 of this state). "In the catalogue of his works contained in the "livre de raison", Redon indicates that the print run by Becquet of Le Pégase captif was not completed. Of the one hundred copies announced, only twenty-five were actually printed in the first state and fifty in the second and final state [...] Executed in 1889, the lithograph was taken up again two years later by the artist to produce a second state, the proofs of which were distributed through Redon's usual intermediaries, Durand-Ruel and Laurent Dumont in Paris and Edmond Deman in Brussels. Sold for 10 francs in 1891, this isolated piece is one of Redon's most frequently exhibited prints, highly appreciated by critics, collectors, and artists alike, among them the sculptor Antoine Bourdelle [who drew a copy]. [...] A symbol of liberated creativity and poetic inspiration, the winged horse figures prominently in Redon's iconographic repertoire. "(Valérie Sueur-Hermel, in R. Rapetti, ed. in Odilon Redon Prince du Rêve, exhibition catalogue, Paris, RMN, 2011, p. 220).
