Jean-Louis Forain (1852-1931
)Subjects of the First World War. 1914-1918. Zinc print. Each [565 x 380]. Superb proofs, mostly on japon, numbered and signed, from an edition of 300 proofs. Some proofs on glazed vellum or thin white laid paper. Lacking in the edges of 3 plates. Slight dusting to some. All margins untrimmed. Set of 198 pp. (in one box).
"The war of 1914-18 gave him a cause worthy of his ardour. From December 8, 1915 until February 1917, Le Figaro published a pencil or charcoal drawing every Wednesday that exalted the patriotism of his fellow citizens; of the hundred or so drawings published on the theme of the Great War, only a few were censored. The simplicity and sobriety of the graphics and captions made the message instantly readable: many readers commented on them passionately. At the same time, Forain did not hesitate to join the newly created camouflage section of the French army at the age of 62, alongside young artists such as Dunoyer de Segonzac, Dufresne, Mare, Blondat and Villon. Jean-Louis Forain was appointed inspector of the camouflage teams in 1915 and left for the front. " (www.lefigaro.fr/histoire/centenaire-14-18)
