JOUAS (Charles). Paris seen from Notre-Dame. Paris : À l'ermitage Saint-Jacques, 1949. - In-folio, 327 x 253: portrait, 47 pp, (3 ff. last 2 blank), illustrated cover. In leaves, filled cover, publisher's folder and slipcase. Rare first edition printed at only 75 numbered copies on Rives wove paper, of this remarkable album of 10 etchings by Charles JOUAS (1866-1942). Meunier, in his preface, reports the artist's words as to the purpose of this suite: "I sought in my prints to be a true witness of our time and to fix some faces of beloved corners of our "old Paris", threatened by the merciless pickaxe of the demolition workers. It is with this in mind that, based on a plan conceived with Alfred Porcabeuf, we have undertaken a "Paris seen from Notre-Dame" which will be a tour of the Parisian horizon. You can see the contrast: Notre-Dame, representing the relative immutability, while around it and beyond it the city is in continual change. These 'old stones', constantly upset, bruised, the rarer they become, the more I love them and want to keep the memory of them..." (pp. 10-11). These plates were begun in 1905 and exhibited at the Galerie Simonson at the "Original black engraving in 1910 and 1913", before being published in volume in this 1949 edition with the assistance of Madame Jouas and the printer Alfred Porcabeuf. In addition to the 10 full-page etchings, there are 4 engravings in the text and one on the cover by Charles Jouas, as well as a frontispiece portrait of the artist by Henri Royer. Copy enriched with a beautiful original drawing signed by Charles Jouas, showing the Seine seen from Notre-Dame. A perfectly preserved copy.
