Red morocco, gilt lace framing and gilt arms in the centre of the boards, spine ribbed and decorated, inner gilt roulette, gilt edges on marbling (period binding). Second edition after the one of 1712, largely enlarged, of this collection of poems by the professor and preacher, disciple of Descartes, Pierre de Villiers (1648-1728). The printer's preface has not been included, replaced by a text entitled Fragments d'une lettre de l'auteur à son imprimeur, in which de Villiers recommends to the latter to put in this edition "neither Avertissement nor Préface, which are usually only used as a pretext by Authors who like to talk about themselves. The edition was however enriched with the 4 songs composing the part De l'éducation des rois dans leur Enfance, and the series of epistles was put in a new order and increased by the epistle L'Auteur à son valet. Of the ten miscellaneous pieces, only the first five appeared in the previous edition. The collection ends with a new poem entitled À son éminence monseigneur le Cardinal de Fleury printed with a particular pagination. A copy bearing the arms of Germain Louis Chauvelin (1685-1762), the only minister of the Ancien Régime who held simultaneously the offices of Keeper of the Seals, when d'Aguesseau was Chancellor, and Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs from 1727 to 1737. A very well preserved copy despite a trace of wetness on the first cover and light wetness in the body of the work . The arms were painted later. Provenance: Germain Louis Chauvelin, with his arms on the boards.
