CALOTTE (regiment of the). On the Calotte.
In French, manuscript on paper.
France, ca. 1721-1750 (?).
2 volumes in-4, marbled calf, framed with triple cold fillet on the boards, spines ornamented, chiselled edges, all edges gilt, lower jaw of the first volume cracked, corners dull, small wormholes on some leaves of the second volume, bookplate (Binding of the time)

Interesting manuscripts from this amazing satirical society which played a major role in the society of the first half of the 18th century.

Manuscripts containing numerous patents awarded by the Calotte Regiment, as well as various documents such as rulings, letters patent, invitations, etc... The Calotte Regiment was created in 1702 by two figures from the entourage of Louis XIV, Etienne Aymon, the King's coat rack, and Philippe Emmanuel de Torsac, an exempted member of the bodyguards. This festive and carnivalesque society set itself the goal of correcting morals and reforming the fashionable style by ridiculing it. It spared few of its contemporaries and attacked, among others, the French Academy, the object of its particular vindictiveness. At the time of its creation, the regiment was reserved for military personnel, but its recruitment was expanded to include all the prestigious personalities of the Court and the City, including a number of ecclesiastics, who no doubt hoped to spare themselves some ridicule. Since the regiment was full of fine minds, the patents and most of the texts were written in verse. The patents were most often circulated in manuscript form. These two volumes are remarkable for the number of items they contain.
