A mandarin's square and two small embroideries framed under glass, China, 19th centuryMandarin's rank badge in embroidered silk on a midnight blue background decorated with a paradise tchitrec on a rock amidst foaming waves on a background of clouds, Buddhist objects and auspicious elements such as peonies, peaches, lingzhi and bats. This two-part square was sewn onto the front of the mandarin's robe and indicated his rank, in this case the chitrec of paradise indicates the rank of ninth rank civil mandarin. Two small embroideries on silk framed under glass decorated with children picking flowering branches from trees in the middle of a flowering landscape are attached.
