"It is graceful, lively in expression, and above all of impeccable execution. Nature, a nature purified by taste, has been studied and imitated with marvellous care; life palpitates in this broad chest and circulates under these muscles of a reality that the chisel has, so to speak, poetised". These eulogistic terms testify to the remarkable reception of the large group of the Childhood of Bacchus (H. 205 cm), presented in plaster at the 1857 Salon, then in marble at the 1863 Salon. By exhibiting this model at the Salon, the winner of the Prix de Rome in 1847 opened up a path of consecration. When he presented his marble commissioned by the Beaux-Arts administration at the 1863 Salon, he also received a medal of honour, followed five years later by a second one at the Universal Exhibition. Witness to the craze for this group, numerous bronze editions were cast in 60 cm and 80 cm heights.
