The castle of Dammartin is mentioned from the 10th century, on the basis of an existing fortress. It is successively the seat of the lordship of Antoine de Chabannes, Count of Dammartin, in the early fifteenth century before being acquired by the Constable Anne de Montmorency in 1554. However, it was quickly abandoned in favor of the palace that he built in Ecouen. The castle then fell into neglect and its walls were used as a stone quarry. At the time of our painting the site is very damaged. Under the Second Empire, the mayor of Dammartin Hubert Lavolée bought it and created a bucolic walk around the ruins. Nothing remains of the castle today.
