This work was created for the exhibition "Les Peintres témoins de leur temps" (Painters as witnesses of their time) which took place from February 2 to March 4, 1951 at the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. Each participant had to create a work on the theme of work. Some of them, like Jean Souverbie, chose the slaughterhouses of La Villette and the Parisian stalls. This exhibition, instituted by the painter Isis Kischka, took place almost every year between 1951 and 1983 at the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris and then in the Palais Galliera.
