Back of HANOUCCA LAMP
Italy, 17th century.
This back is probably originally a decorative element intended for the clergy and reused to make a lamp. This explains the presence of an ecclesiastical coat of arms and the flat bishop's hat held by the two cherubs.
Fused bronze, openwork and bearing traces of gilding.
The plate is decorated with two grotesque female forms, cherubs, foliage and scrolls that flank a cartouche bearing a coat of arms.
19,5 x 22 cm

Hanukkah lamps with elements from the 17th century are particularly rare

.

This back is very similar to that of the Hanukkah lamp owned by the Victoria and Albert Museum under the reference M.418-1956. It differs from it, however, in its coat of arms. It is also very close to the copy sold by Ader Nordmann on March 22, 2017 (lot n° 121).
