Isidore Lazare, chief rabbi of France from 1867 to his death in 1888, remained famous for his opposition to the More Judaico oath which won him a lawsuit. He thus obtained the abolition of this discriminatory oath.
This medal illustrates another aspect of his personality. Like many French Jews and out of gratitude, he committed himself to defend the nation. The Israelite archives of August 1st thus exhort the Israelites to give their support to the country in danger in the name of " de civilization and démocratie " because " c'est le drapeau tricolore qui a promené dans le monde les grandes idées de justice et de fraternité humaine, de liberté des cultes et d'égalité des consciences " ( c'is the tricolor flag that has promoted in the world the great ideas of justice and human fraternity, freedom of worship and equality of the consciences ).
