Albert BARTHOLOME (1848-1928). L.A.S. dated January 17, 1898, 4 p. in-8. Letter in which Bartholomew explains why he does not want to sign the request for a review of the Dreyfus trial. What he justifies ainsi : " Je cannot admit that all the officers who were part of the war councils and who knew all the secrets of the case have unanimously become accomplices in a judicial crime. Not one of them would have resigned in free protest. I know of one who is the very honour and who told his worried relatives about all this bruit : calm down, we have not seen enough to condemn him once but twenty times. I believe this man more than I believe Zola who, without having seen anything, without any proof, insults the army of his country. ...] I am convinced that if Dreyfus could be brought back for a retrial, it would be to see him convicted once again. What would be in it for him? What would we gain? » This letter shows how difficult it is to imagine Dreyfus being innocent after his conviction. Thus, it is not out of anti-Semitism that Bartholomew is siding with the anti-Dreyfus, but out of a deep conviction that if the army has condemned him, it is rightly so. Albert BARTHOLOMÉ (1848-1928) is one of the great sculptors of the 19th and early 20th centuries. He was a close friend of Edgar Degas.
