THE BUTTER PLATE. Special edition. Long live England. Paris, [1943]. - In-4, 296 x 229, stapled. Very rare issue published in 1943, intended for anti-Semitic and anti-British propaganda, hijacking the cover of issue 119 of L'Assiette au beurre and offering a series of cartoons from different issues of this magazine, with new captions. Tears with no gaps on the cover. Attached is the actual issue 119 of L'Assiette au beurre, entitled Loubet à Londres, illustrated by Galanis and d'Ostoya. Very well preserved copy. Also enclosed are two faded copies of issue no. 99 of February 21, 1903, entitled La Mano negra, illustrated by Camara, Gose, Grandjouan, Hradeck and Meaulle. One of them is enriched with a very rare supplement of Les Temps nouveaux on the same subject, with the same title, illustrated by Hermann Paul and with texts by Clémenceau, Élie Pécaut, Francis de Pressensé, A.-Ferdinand Hérold, Jean Jaurès, Lucien Descaves, Pierre Quillard, etc. La Mano Negra was a clandestine anarchist movement in Andalusia . Following a series of crimes in Andalusia, the Spanish government took advantage of the situation to sentence opponents of the regime to death. Seven farm workers were garroted on June 14, 1884, and in 1903 four defendants were still in prison. This led to demonstrations, particularly in France, demanding their release.
