[ DREYFUSE BUSINESS ]. psst...! - The Whistle. Paris, 1898-1899. - 105 fascicules in one volume in-folio, 386 x 270. Half calf purple, spine ribbed, untrimmed, slipcase (modern binding). Complete collection of the satirical antidreyfusard journal psst...! and the satirical dreyfusard journal Le Sifflet. The first one was published by the painter Jean-Louis Forain (1852-1931) and the draftsman Caran d'Ache (1859-1909); it includes 85 issues published between February 5, 1898 and September 16, 1899, each composed of two leaves decorated with caricatures. The Whistle, which is bound with it, was created by Achille Steens to answer the psst...! of Caran d'Ache and Forain. Composed on the same model, it consists of 72 numbers published between February 17, 1898 and June 16, 1899, including caricatures of Félix Vallotton, Hermann-Paul, Henri-Gabriel Ibels, Louis Chevalier, Raoul Barré and Édouard Couturier. It is interesting to see the two newspapers placed in parallel, revealing the violence that the written press was indulging in at the end of the 19th century. This violence was multiplied tenfold by the fact that it did not use words, but images, in this case caricature, which was more likely to strike people's minds. Perfectly preserved copy, despite the past back as well as some minor repairs and tears in a few numbers.
