GILL (André) - POLO (François). The Eclipse. Weekly political, satirical and illustrated newspaper. Paris: Newspaper office, January 26, 1868-June 25, 1876. - 5 volumes large in-folio, bradel demi-toile bordeaux with corners, smooth spine, untrimmed, covers preserved (modern binding). COMPLETE COLLECTION OF FASCICLES GRAND IN-FOLIO OF THIS FAMOUS POLITICAL AND SATIRICAL NEWSPAPER. Directed by François Polo, L'Éclipse is a continuation of La Lune, a newspaper published under the same direction between 1865 and 1868. Illustrated mainly by André Gill, L'Éclipse suffered many setbacks, censorship not hesitating to put a brake on the illustrator's ingenuity . This censorship greatly disturbed Gill, to the point that he felt his talent and security were threatened. Valmy-Baysse recalls that from October 4, 1868, to August 14, 1870, the administration banned no fewer than 22 issues of L'Éclipse (Valmy-Baysse, Le roman d'un caricaturiste, André Gill, 1927, p. 129). This censorship often reacted at the last moment, so that a new cartoon had to be composed in a hurry. Reconstructed copies usually bear the issue number followed by the letter "b" for bis. The caricatures touched on political, artistic and literary figures as well as people from the world of art and literature. In 1876, two years after the death of François Polo, sales of the newspaper were running out of steam and it was decided to reduce the format. Gill did not find what he wanted, dreaming of great compositions, and began a new adventure with La Lune rousse, the first issue of which appeared on 10 December 1876. In addition to André Gill's illustrations, we find those of Job, Lemot, Durandeau, Draner, Ladreyt, Mobb, Pépin, etc. ONE OF THE VERY RARE COPIES OF THE DELUXE EDITION ON LARGE PAPER, AT THE PRICE OF 30 CENTS. It is composed as follows: Volume 1: 1868: 56 numbers including numbers 1 to 49 and the numbers bis 14, 1
