[DADA REVIEWS]
Proverb.
Paris, February 1, 1920-April 1, 1920. - 3 fascicules in-8 of 2 leaves each. In sheets.

All the first 3 of the 6 issues of this review Dada published by Paul Éluard, who was only 25 years old at the time, and to which the main protagonists of the movement collaborated such as Louis Aragon, André Breton, Paul Éluard, Jean Paulhan, Francis Picabia, Maurice Raynal, Philippe Soupault, Georges Ribemont-Dessaignes, Tristan Tzara, etc., etc.

Proverb is one of the most interesting Dada magazines published in the twenties. It was intended to exist only to justify the words, as Éluard explained to Tzara in a letter of December 19, 1919: "Until further notice, it will be a question of showing that the French language (and the expression of thought naturally) is no longer a literary instrument. The first issue also carries this explicit discourse by Apollinaire:
"O bouches l'homme est à la recherche d'un nouveau langageAuquel
le

grammairien d'aucune langue n'aura rien à dire

" (
O mouths man is in search of a new languageAu auquel
le

grammairien d'aucune langue n'aura rien à dire

).

The fifth issue of this review appeared on May 1, 1920, and the end of publication coincided with the end of the public performances organized by Dada. A sixth issue was nevertheless published a year later, on July 1, 1921, under the title L'Invention N° 1 and Proverb N° 6.
The third number is printed in red.

Freckles and tears on the edges of the first issue.
