AFTER JULES-AURÈLE MEISSONNIER: PRIX DES RÉGATES ROYALES DE CANNES 1937 The
origin of this silver bottle bucket is known by an 18th century engraving by Gabriel Huquier. It was made by Meissonnier in 1723 for Louis Henri de Bourbon. In the rocaille style, it rests on a poly-lobed base moulded with ovals, dots and staples. The body is embossed with bacchanal scenes and two medallions framing two mythological scenes, one depicting Neptune striking his horses from his trident, the second probably Bacchus on his chariot pulled by two griffins. The two handles depict two mythological angiped figures holding two dolphins in their raised arms, facing each other and forming a grip.
The Royal Regattas of Cannes take their name from King Christian X of Denmark who participated in these nautical races between 1929 and 1939. Punched with a weevil.
