HENRY (Mauritius).

The Metamorphoses of the Void.

Paris : les Éditions de Minuit, [1955]. - In-4, 270 x 210: (32 ff.). Illustrated black cardboard from the publisher.

Original edition of this story in pictures telling the dreamlike and poetic journey of Adrien.

This work is the work of the poet, painter and illustrator Maurice HENRY (1907-1984), close to the surrealists. It is considered one of the most beautiful object books of the 20th century. It is composed of 64 colour plates on 32 leaves, 16 of which are openwork.

"In the image of the dreamlike and enchanting journey of the character, who has left the mainland to travel through fantastic landscapes, alternately aquatic, vegetal and mineral, these journeys induce a new logic in the reading and upset its temporality: each leaf turned is a step towards a surprise.

With their surrealist overtones, these Metamorphoses, quite apart in Maurice Henry's work, also contain images of key reminiscences of his existence by bringing together the figures of fellow travellers such as René Daumal, poet of the Grand Jeu, and André Breton" (presentation of Les Sandres editions for the reissue of the book in 2018).

Second edition copy, the first having been largely destroyed in a fire.

Copy well preserved despite a tear of about ten centimetres in the canvas of the spine.
