[REVIEWS] The Eclipse. Paris, 1868-1870. - 92 single-volume fascicles in folio, green half-basan, smooth spine decorated (contemporary binding). Volume including fascicles 46 to 124 of the famous political and satirical journal L'Éclipse, corresponding to the last month of 1868, the complete year 1869 and the first 6 months of 1870. Directed by François Polo, L'Éclipse was a continuation of La Lune, a newspaper published under the same direction between 1865 and 1868. Illustrated mainly by André Gill, L'Éclipse suffered many setbacks, censorship not hesitating to put a brake on the illustrator's ingenuity. This censorship greatly indisposed Gill, to the extent that he felt his talent and security were threatened. Valmy-Baysse recalls that from October 4, 1868 to August 14, 1870, the administration would ban no less than twenty-two issues of the Eclipse (Valmy-Baysse, Le roman d'un caricaturiste, André Gill, ed. 1927, p. 129). This censorship often reacted at the last moment, so that a new cartoon had to be composed in a hurry. Reconstructed copies usually bear the issue number followed by the letter "b" for bis. The caricatures touched on political, artistic and literary figures as well as people from the world of art and literature. This volume is complete with the censored numbers for the corresponding period, but also with the reconstructed numbers, namely 46bis, 49bis, 51bis, 53bis, 55bis, 59bis, 71bis, 87bis, 92bis, 98bis, 103bis, 106bis, 114bis and 116bis. There is also the title illustrated in colour by Hadol, for the year 1869, and the leaflet containing the Designation of charges and portraits contained in the second volume of the Eclipse. COPIES ON STRONG PAPER, SOLD AT 30 CENTIMES PER FASCICLE INSTEAD OF 10 CENTIMES ON ORDINARY PAPER. The colours on this paper are brilliant. Rubbed back, damaged headdress, blunt corners. The title and the printed sheet are unbound and torn at the edge
