Roger MARTIN DU GARD (1881-1958). L.A.S., Bellême (Orne), February 20, 1928, to bookseller-publisher Edward Heilbuth; 2 pages in-8 at his address, envelope. We enclose 2 L.A.S. and a telegram to Georges Alphandéry (Nice 1943), about a consignment of honey which, after having been mislaid, brought joy to his family plunged into an awful famine: "we are not only deprived of vegetables, fruits, everything, and not only reduced to our regular rations, but condemned each month to throw into the basket a number of tickets which, for lack of food, we could not exchange for "earthly food" ".

On the reissue of his first book, Devenir, originally published on his own account in 1908 by Ollendorff, and for which Heilbuth was about to publish an illustrated edition of 15 lithographs by Jean Marchand under the firm Eos (this small publishing house, created in 1925 by Heilbuth, did not survive the death of its founder in 1934) / He returned the corrected proofs. "The indications I have sometimes given for line spacing and blank spaces are only suggestions; if it disturbs your balance too much, don't take them into account". As for dedications, he has "never before been in the habit of signing volumes for people you don't know. I know that Valéry has done a lot of that, and he's had a lot of trouble doing it [...] I don't want to turn you down completely, however. But please send me only the few copies that you really care about"...
