Alessandro MANZONI (1785-1873). L.A.S., Milan 10 February 1857, to Padre Caccia; 2 pages and a quarter in-8; in Italian. Attached is an l.a.s. in Italian by Father Antonio Rosmini (1797-1855), at Placido Battallier in Carpentras (Stresa 24 July 1853). It is a new inconvenience for him to have to answer negatively again to a proposal made to him through his correspondent, and which affects another person. But he cannot conceal the fact that, whatever the negotiation with the New York publisher, he could not bring himself to accept a mutilated translation, nor to lend part of the woodcuts. If he has entered into negotiation, it is to deal at all, but he cannot postpone a profit which he has a duty not to neglect . Etc.
