Charles BAUDELAIRE (1821-1867). L.A.S., August 1 [for September] 1854, to Narcisse Ancelle; 2-3 of page in-8, address "Monsieur Ancelle" initialed "CB". Violent letter to his judicial council, about his debt to the antique dealer Arondel, from whom he bought many paintings and furniture. "The Town Hall must be renounced; from today, I am obliged to return to my busy life. - I don't know if by the 5th I will find a few hundred francs to flee Arondel; but, in any case, I can't stay, like the player, without a floor. I'm not asking you for the 100 fr. you have the receipt for. I know that you are appalled by the money you give, just as others are dazzled by the money they receive. 100 francs is more than you can handle. - Just give back 50 francs. I lost the Good Shepherd paper. As I'll have to go and see you again these days (I found your Schiller), if I haven't found this letter, I'll ask you for another one. - These 50 fr. are only for me; I gave the 100 fr. to Madame Lemer. I received an interminable letter from my mother who left without coming to see me . [This debt will pursue Baudelaire all his life, and even afterwards, since Arondel will sue Madame Aupick, Baudelaire's mother, and will obtain a compensation of 1500 francs, in 1872]. In the upper right-hand corner, a note from Ancelle's hand: "Given 50 f without receipt ". Correspondence, vol. I, p. 291.
