Meunier, in his preface, relates the artist's words as to the purpose of this suite: "I have sought in my prints to be a true witness of our times and to fix some faces of beloved corners of our 'old Paris', threatened by the merciless pickaxe of the demolition workers. It is with this in mind that, on a plan devised with Alfred Porcabeuf, we have undertaken a "Paris seen from Notre-Dame" which will be a Parisian tour d'horizon. You see the contrast sought: Our Lady, representing the immutable relative, while around her and beyond the city is in continual change. These "old stones" are always upset, bruised, the rarer they become, the more I like them and want to keep
the memory of them... " (pp. 10-11).
These plates were begun in 1905 and exhibited at the Simonson Gallery in the "Original etching in black in 1910 and 1913", before being published in volume in this 1949 edition with the help of Madame Jouas and the printer
 Alfred Porcabeuf. In
addition to the 10 full-page etchings presented, there are 4 etchings in the text and one on the cover of Charles Jouas, as well as a portrait of the artist in the frontispiece
 by Henri Royer.
