Pierre-Imbert Drevet (1697-1739) Portrait de Jacques-Bénigne Bossuet. 1723. Gravé d’après H. Rigaud. I.F.F. 9 ; Regency to Empire 8. Très belle épreuve. Quelques rousseurs, essentiellement visibles au verso. Petites marges. Ex-coll. C. Josserand, Lyon (Lugt non décrit). « Drevet summoned all his creative energy and technological genius to interpret, with the burin, Rigaud’s complex mise-en-scène. He exhausted the engraver’s repertory of tailles, contretailles, entretailles, hachures (droites, courbes, en points, lozenges) to recreate in black and white the luxurious textures of the painted model. (…) Pierre-Imbert Drevet’s engraved portrait of Bossuet is generally acknowledged as the French chef-d’œuvre not only of the Drevet school but of French eighteenth-century portrait engraving. » (V. Carlson, Regency to Empire, French Printmaking 1715-1814, The Baltimore Museum of Art and the Minneapolis Institute of arts, 1984, p. 63).
